Can we do something? by Roberto Ruggeri
by > 28 February 2008

In the last twenty years the economy, with all its ways of teasing us to pushing to buy useless stuff, changed so much that is hard enough just to see and understand it. It's not me the one who will tell you what to do or not to. I am just thinking a little out of my mind trying to share with you my thoughts.

All the big companies and the indie too in any category, put so much energy just to reach the final consumers that we can now get into any store and watch with wonder so many and so well-done items trying to capture our attention so that at the end we sure pick up one instead of the other. But,  yes there is a but, are we sure that we all need this kinda of market? There is something not really right in all of this. It recently happened to me to go out shopping and put my eyes on a super nice t-shirt with a great and quite difficult foil print all over. That tee was in the sale section and I bought it with proud. By the time I got to pay, I told the guy - a good friend - that that tee was sooo great.... and he told me exactly "you know we didn't sell any of it that's why is on sale". That maybe doesn't mean a thing to you but to me (I produce clothing and I know well all the efforts behind the items) it was a shock and it made me thinking that today the whole market is saturated : too many offers, too many colors, too many ads, too many of too much, too many brands offering just the same item, too many brands copying too many other brands, too many cool brands trying to fight the corporations but offering just a different product that they wish to sell too. Just keen competitors at the end, nothing more. Time is running too fast and it seems that everybody is pushing you to buy buy and buy making you feel weird and out of the herd if you don't own this or that. Man invented something that used to be great when was found: the black oil aka the petrol, and now we have to bear the burden. Man invented the right alternative to that, that is the kind of engine that can be used for cars that do NOT need any petrol. But we don't do anything to have it on the market so the snake-men can go on with the selling of that something that will kill our world. But who cares? We won't be here then so why should we get worried? I feel like I am a little stupid. Maybe I am. Maybe I am just different. Not much different. But how can I explain you that I feel sooo good when I walk on a secret beach, still we have many in this crazy world, where you don't need any super store to go shopping nor even need a car to drive the highway burning chemical shit that will kill us in a few years. That's not the solution, I don' t have solutions. I just want you to think, turn your head around like you got possessed, and watch, watch how the people around you run, run run, eating fast brunches instead of sharing a cool meal with the rest of the family or friends, look how they all stopped talking and smiling each others and think. We still can do something: THINK.

Hey Rob, That's the American way, and everybody wants to be an American or have what the Americans have. More, More, More. Of course it's all bull shit. We often forget that we're all born with free will. WE have a choice to run with the masses or be an outcast. I think I've chosen solitude. Is it nice to be the only one who does this or that. Try this on for your mind. Don't try so hard to fit in, when you were born to stand out. If you think differently it's ok. The world is an engine running on followers. Those who follow generate that which is. It's difficult to continue being yourself, being, thinking different. Wanting more than what the masses offers. But if you look inside and wholely appreciate who you are, it can be done. If there were a secluded beach, pretty soon everyone would learn about it and destroy it's purity. When you think of the world as an evolutionary process you realize that everything must change and this too shall pass. Be peaceful.
